# What Sharing Apps Do to Photo Metadata

A source-aware guide to the difference between a compressed photo, a file attachment, and the platform data you cannot inspect inside the downloaded image.

## The app name is not enough to predict the result

The same service can send a compressed image in one mode and an original file in another. Public-file metadata and a platform’s separate operational data are also different layers. Compare the methods below, read the linked evidence, then inspect your actual recipient-facing file.

Behavior can change by app version, file type, and how a file is shared. Treat every result as version-sensitive evidence, not a permanent guarantee.

## Compare the sharing method

| Method | Observed or documented file behavior | Check before sharing | Evidence |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| WhatsApp | In the cited test, photo mode removed the tested EXIF; document mode preserved the original file. | Choose the sending mode deliberately and inspect the received copy. | [Read the evidence](https://beforeshare.com/en/metadata-lab/does-whatsapp-remove-metadata) |
| Instagram | The tested published image was re-encoded and lost critical EXIF. | This says nothing about account or upload data held by the platform. | [Read the evidence](https://beforeshare.com/en/metadata-lab/does-instagram-remove-exif) |
| Email attachment | The tested ordinary attachment retained its file bytes and EXIF. | A photo-app resize can change the file; check the actual attachment. | [Read the evidence](https://beforeshare.com/en/metadata-lab/does-email-preserve-metadata) |
| AirDrop | Apple says photo sharing includes Location unless it is turned off in Options. | Check the share-sheet Options; All Photos Data sends more of the original. | [Read the evidence](https://beforeshare.com/en/metadata-lab/does-airdrop-share-location) |
| Google Drive | There is no documented metadata-sanitization guarantee for a shared uploaded file. | Inspect the downloaded file, especially after conversion. | [Read the evidence](https://beforeshare.com/en/metadata-lab/does-google-drive-remove-metadata) |

## The reliable rule: clean before the platform

Platform processing changes over time and may differ by mode. Remove sensitive embedded metadata before upload, then separately review visible clues and the platform’s access settings.

To confirm what a platform actually kept, [inspect the received copy](https://beforeshare.com/en/view-metadata) or follow the [file privacy checklist](https://beforeshare.com/en/safe-sharing-checklist) before sending.

> Interactive tool: in a browser, the person chooses a local file here. It is inspected and cleaned on their device, and nothing is uploaded. An agent can open this page for the person but cannot pass a file to it; see https://beforeshare.com/agent-guide.md.

## Social Media Metadata FAQ

**Does Instagram remove location data from photos?**

A 2025 independent study found critical EXIF, including geolocation, absent from its Instagram-processed images. That result concerns the output file and does not prove the platform holds no separate account, device, or upload information.

**Does WhatsApp remove metadata when I send a photo?**

In the cited 2025 study, normal image mode removed the tested EXIF fields while document mode preserved them. App versions and sharing settings can change, so clean first for privacy or verify the received file for evidence preservation.

**Does email remove photo GPS metadata?**

Do not assume it does. MIME file attachments are designed to transport file data reversibly, and the reviewed controlled study found full tested EXIF retention for email attachments.

**Which sharing method is safest for photo privacy?**

No platform route is a permanent privacy guarantee. The most reliable workflow is to remove sensitive metadata before sharing and inspect the exact copy you plan to send.

**Do Telegram, Discord, Facebook, X, or LinkedIn remove photo metadata?**

BeforeShare has not tested these apps, and their behavior can change with the app version and with how you send the file. Services that recompress a photo often drop embedded metadata, while sending it as a file or document usually delivers the original bytes, EXIF and GPS included. Remove sensitive metadata before you post and, when it matters, inspect the copy the recipient actually receives.
