Remove C2PA metadata from an image

Use the cleaner below to create a fresh JPG, PNG, or WebP copy without embedded C2PA content credentials or provenance tags when they are stored as removable metadata.

Check for AI image metadata first

BeforeShare shows AI-related fields before cleanup, including creator-tool names, model tags, prompt-related values, software fields, and standard EXIF/XMP/IPTC data.

Clean locally before sharing

The image is processed in your browser. The file contents do not need to be uploaded to BeforeShare for the normal inspection and cleaning flow.

What Is AI Metadata?

Many AI image tools save hidden provenance data inside the file. These fields can include the generator name, creator tool, model or workflow details, prompt-related text, timestamps, and C2PA content credentials.

What We Remove From AI-Generated Images

BeforeShare creates a new cleaned image copy in your browser. That removes embedded metadata such as EXIF, XMP, PNG text chunks, creator-tool fields, and other hidden AI provenance tags attached to supported JPG, PNG, and WebP files.

C2PA, Prompts, and Watermarks Are Different

C2PA / Content Credentials

C2PA is provenance metadata attached to a media file. It can identify the issuing tool, edits, signing information, and history when a compatible credential is embedded.

Prompt and model metadata

Some generators and workflows store prompt text, negative prompts, seeds, samplers, model names, checkpoints, LoRA names, or workflow JSON in XMP or PNG text fields.

Visible watermarks

A visible label, logo, signature, or platform badge is part of the image pixels. Metadata cleanup does not remove visible content.

Platform copies

If an image was already uploaded elsewhere, that platform may keep its own server copy or internal records. Cleaning your local file only changes the copy you download here.

What Changes When You Clean the Image

What stays

Visible pixels, edits, crops, and image content remain. Metadata removal does not blur or redraw the picture.

What goes

Hidden EXIF, XMP, IPTC, PNG text chunks, creator-tool fields, timestamps, model settings, and content-credential metadata are removed when they are embedded in supported formats.

What to review

If the image visibly contains a watermark, signature, prompt text, username, or private detail, remove that separately before sharing.

When to Use Each Workflow

  • Use the viewer first if you need to know whether a file contains C2PA or AI provenance fields.
  • Use the cleaner when you want a new shareable copy without removable metadata containers.
  • Use image editing or redaction separately for visible labels, names, watermarks, screenshots, or signatures.
  • Keep the original if you may need provenance proof later; share the cleaned copy when privacy matters more.

Common AI Metadata Fields We Detect

  • C2PA content credentials and provenance manifests
  • Creator-tool fields naming tools such as ChatGPT, DALLΒ·E, Midjourney, Firefly, or Stable Diffusion
  • Prompt, negative prompt, seed, sampler, and workflow metadata when present
  • Model, checkpoint, or generation settings stored in XMP or PNG text chunks
  • Software, export, and timestamp fields linked to AI image creation
  • Standard EXIF/IPTC/XMP metadata

Who Needs AI Metadata Removal?

  • People sharing AI-assisted images without exposing tool or workflow details
  • Designers delivering assets after editing outputs from generators such as Midjourney, DALLΒ·E, Firefly, or Stable Diffusion
  • Teams reviewing whether an image contains content credentials or other provenance markers before publishing
  • Creators who want to inspect AI-related tags first and then save a cleaner copy
  • Anyone comparing standard metadata cleanup with AI-specific provenance cleanup

AI Metadata FAQ

Can I remove C2PA metadata from an image?

Yes. BeforeShare creates a cleaned image copy that removes embedded metadata containers such as EXIF, XMP, IPTC, PNG text chunks, and content-credential fields when they are stored in the supported JPG, PNG, or WebP file.

Does this remove visible AI watermarks?

No. It removes hidden metadata only. Visible watermarks, labels, signatures, or text inside the image pixels must be edited separately.

Does the image upload to a server?

No. The normal BeforeShare workflow inspects and cleans the file locally in your browser.

Which AI tools can leave metadata?

AI and editing tools can store creator-tool fields, C2PA manifests, content credentials, prompt data, model names, workflow settings, software versions, and timestamps. Availability depends on the tool and export settings.

Is removing C2PA the same as removing an AI watermark?

No. C2PA and Content Credentials are metadata/provenance records. A visible or pixel-level watermark is different and is not removed by metadata cleanup.

Can I check the image before removing anything?

Yes. Use the metadata viewer or upload the image on this page first. BeforeShare shows detected AI/provenance fields before creating the cleaned copy.
