What Is AI Metadata in Files?

AI tools can embed hidden provenance or tool data inside generated images, PDFs, and documents. These fields can identify which AI tool generated the file, the model or app used, prompt text, workflow settings, timestamps, C2PA content credentials, PDF document properties, and DOCX author fields.

C2PA / Content Credentials

C2PA is provenance metadata attached to a media file. It can identify the issuing tool, edits, signing information, and history when a compatible credential is embedded.

Prompt and model metadata

Some generators and workflows store prompt text, negative prompts, seeds, samplers, model names, checkpoints, LoRA names, or workflow JSON in XMP or PNG text fields.

Visible watermarks

A visible label, logo, signature, or platform badge is part of the image pixels. Metadata cleanup does not remove visible content.

What Changes When You Clean the File

What stays

The visible subject, dimensions, edits, and crops remain. JPEG files are re-encoded, so file bytes and compression can change even when the picture looks the same.

What goes

Hidden EXIF, XMP, IPTC, PNG text chunks, creator-tool fields, timestamps, model settings, and content-credential metadata are removed when they are embedded in supported formats.

What to review

If the image visibly contains a watermark, signature, prompt text, username, or private detail, remove that separately before sharing.
